Les Couleurs, Stonda
Teach children colors and culture with "poèmes" and "chansons" from France.

Use the power of music, rhythm, and story to help your budding French-speakers discover les couleurs françaises. Traditional songs, poems, and stories reinforce colors vocabulary and complement the games and activities of this thematic unit.

Colors Vocabulary

Teach the masculine and feminine forms of the French colors.

  • bleu/bleue - blue
  • blanc/blanche - white
  • rouge - red
  • violet/violette - purple
  • jaune - yellow
  • orange - orange
  • vert/verte - green
  • rose - pink
  • noir/noire - black
  • brun/brune - brown
  • marron - brown
  • gris/grise - gray
  • clair - light
  • foncé - dark

Practice the vocabulary online by listening to the colors at Hello World and playing a concentration game at KidsCom.

Colors Song

Practice the colors with this song to the tune of Frère Jacques:

  • Bleu, blanc, rouge (repeat)
  • Violet (repeat)
  • Jaune, Rose, Vert, Orange (repeat)
  • Noir, gris, brun (repeat)

French Flag Craft

Make a simple French flag. All you need is a paint stirrer and 3-inch x 2-inch strips of felt or foam in blue, white, and red. Simply glue the colored pieces together and attach them to the paint stirrer. Voilà . . . un drapeau français!

Poem: Les Papillons (Butterflies)

Children can illustrate and memorize this charming colors poem by Pierre Gamarra:

  • Un papillon bleu - a blue butterfly
  • Un papillon rouge - a red butterfly
  • Un papillon tremble - a butterfly trembles
  • Un papillon bouge - a butterfly moves
  • Un papillon rose - a pink butterfly
  • Qui vole et se pose - that flies and lands
  • Un papillon d'or - a gold butterfly
  • Qui tremble et s'endort - that trembles and goes to sleep

Poem: Mon Chapeau (My Hat)

Present this traditional poem as a CLOZE activity, with blanks where the colors belong. Students need to read the rhyme to determine the missing color. For a more hands-on activity, cut the poem into strips and ask students to arrange the lines into matching pairs.

  • Quand je mets mon chapeau gris - When I put on my gray hat
  • C'est pour aller sous la pluie - It's for going out in the rain
  • Quand je mets mon chapeau vert - When I put on my green hat
  • C'est que je suis en colère - It means I'm mad
  • Quand je mets mon chapeau bleu - When I put on my blue hat
  • C'est que ca va déjà mieux - It means I'm already doing better
  • Quand je mets mon chapeau blanc - When I put on my white hate
  • C'est que je suis très content. - It means that I'm very happy.
